Production Design by Leanne Smith
The journey of our production
We started with sketches and moved to models to experiment with creating a variety of options for staging. Throughout the process we even created a set in our home to see what could be done.
Using the colours of the Pride flag as the base pallet the variations would be used for all costumes and sets. A key concept was to use variations of the flag colours for each character’s residence. Giving each of the main characters a colour theme.
The approach to production
Taking a look at the production and as music theatre was still in recovery in 2021 we had to decide on the approach. We wanted to create a production that was scalable for the future yet adaptable for different circumstances. So we took a bottom-up approach by creating four layers of production. We used drawings, models, and even our own home to design it.
Tier 1 – Minimal sets that were removable and interchangeable
Tier 2 – More set pieces that the cast brought on and took off to enhance the visual indication
Tier 3 – One or two major sets that were on stage and turned to reveal another setting mixed with pieces brought on by cast.
Tier 4 – Full sets for all characters and Take it easy café but all sets moving forward and back to reveal different scenarios.
